How to split a group gift (without chasing anyone for money)

A colleague is leaving, a friend is turning 40, or the whole family wants to give Grandma one proper Christmas present instead of six small ones. Someone suggests chipping in. Someone else buys the gift. And a week later, that person is still trying to remember who has paid.

Here is a simple way to split a group gift: who pays up front, when an even split works, a worked example with example numbers, and how to keep track in SplitSlip.

Who pays up front?

In almost every group gift, one person buys it and the others pay that person back. That is fine, as long as everyone knows two things before the purchase:

A short message in the group chat ("I'll buy it, around $90, who's in?") saves a lot of awkward follow-ups later.

Equal split or agreed shares?

An equal split is the default and usually the right one. Everyone who is in pays the same share of the gift.

Agreed shares make sense when the gift has parts that not everyone is part of. For example, two people want to add a bottle of wine to the present. Instead of raising everyone's share, treat the wine as its own item and split it only between the two who added it.

The rule of thumb: one gift, one even split. Anything extra is a separate item for the people who wanted it.

Worked example: a leaving gift for four colleagues

These are example numbers, not real prices. Alex buys everything on her card.

PersonSweater ($90, split 4 ways)Bottle of wine ($20, split 2 ways)Share
Alex$22.50$10.00$32.50
Ben$22.50$10.00$32.50
Cara$22.50–$22.50
Dan$22.50–$22.50
Total$90.00$20.00$110.00

Alex paid $110. Ben sends her $32.50, and Cara and Dan send $22.50 each. Alex's own share of $32.50 is already covered by what she paid.

What if someone drops out?

It happens: someone forgets, changes their mind or can't afford it this month. Two simple options:

Whatever you choose, say it openly in the group so nobody is surprised by a bigger share.

How to split a group gift in SplitSlip

  1. Create a project for the gift and add everyone who is chipping in. Friends without the app can be added as guests.
  2. Add the receipt. Add it by hand for free, or scan it. The AI scan reads the receipt into line items; check the items and amounts before you split them.
  3. Split each item. Split the gift equally between everyone, and give extras only to the people who added them. One item can be shared between several people.
  4. See who owes whom. SplitSlip works out each person's share and shows who should pay the buyer.
  5. Share the guest link. Guests can view a shared link without an account. The link is view-only. To edit, they install SplitSlip and sign in.
  6. Settle up outside the app, for example by bank transfer or your usual payment app. SplitSlip doesn't move money.

Splitting more than one gift, or a whole trip? See our split expenses app page. For one shared bill, the bill splitter page shows how it works.

What does it cost?

You can add a receipt by hand for free, or scan it. You get 50 free AI scans, and after that more AI scans are available as in-app purchases.

Group gift: questions and answers

How do you split the cost of a group gift?

Agree who buys it and who is in before the purchase. Split the gift equally between everyone who is in, and treat any extras as separate items for the people who wanted them. Then each person pays the buyer back.

Should the person who organises the gift pay less?

Usually not. Most groups split the gift equally, including the organiser. If you want to thank the organiser, agree on it together beforehand.

What if not everyone wants to chip in the same amount?

Keep the main gift as an even split and let people add their own extras, such as a card, flowers or a bottle, as separate items they pay for themselves.

Can friends without the app see what they owe?

Yes. Guests can view a shared link without an account. The link is view-only.

Does SplitSlip send the money?

No. SplitSlip shows who owes whom. You pay each other outside the app, for example by bank transfer or your usual payment app.
